Global Appeal for Fair and Peaceful Elections in Taiwan

Taiwan will hold two major national elections on January 14, 2012 for the President and the National Parliament. These elections are critical for the further consolidation of democracy and freedom in Taiwan after several decades of harsh authoritarian rule. Despite the progress that Taiwan has demonstrated since the lifting of Martial Law in 1987, there are serious concerns as to whether these elections will be fair, free, open, and peaceful.

The International Committee for Fair Elections in Taiwan has been formed to articulate these concerns, by engaging the moral authority and democratic leadership of the civilized international community. Therefore, to express solidarity with the people of Taiwan at this key juncture, the Committee issues the following global appeal:

We call on all domestic actors in Taiwan to abide by the principles of a fair election, and in particular to refrain from any violent behavior, before, during, and after the election. Furthermore, all parties and candidates should accept the results gracefully, while referring any disputes to the proper mechanisms for adjudication.

We call on all actors outside Taiwan to refrain from any attempts – political, military, or economic – to manipulate the outcome of the elections. We call on all members of the international community to respect the political choices freely made by the people of Taiwan . We call on all members of the international community to work together with the duly elected government in the pursuit of the universal values of freedom and human rights.
